Page to remain Wales manager after Williams backing

-

The Football Association of Wales has backed Rob Page’s belief that he is the best man to take the country forward despite last night’s heartbreaking Euro 2024 play-off defeat to Poland.

Page spoke in the immediate aftermath of the 5-4 penalty shoot-out loss – Dan James the unfortunate man to miss – and insisted he should be given more time to work with a squad he believes is in a transitional period.

The FAW president Steve Williams agreed and today moved to shut down any talk of Page being sacked by claiming they see him fulfilling his current contract that runs until the summer of 2026.

He said: “The FAW can confirm Rob Page is their manager for the forthcoming campaign in accordance with his contract.

“Rob is the manager. His contract runs to the end of the World Cup and that is how we continue to work.”

Page took over in November 2020 from Ryan Giggs, initially on an interim basis, before being handed the job long-term and guiding the Welsh to their first World Cup since 1958 in Qatar 18 months ago.

Qualification for Euro 2024 was not always smooth with a failure to beat Armenia home or away ultimately meaning they faced the lottery of the play-offs and ultimate disappointment.

Nevertheless, Page is confident he can still take the team forward.

He said: “We’re a team in transition and, while we’re in transition, we’re one penalty kick away from qualifying.

“We’ve got games in June, Nations League in the autumn and then the start of a World Cup qualifying campaign.

“So that’s my full focus now, building on what we’ve already started and the transition we’re in at this moment in time.”
